Peace Bears
Every Peace Bear is knitted personally by Figen, given a name and sent into the world with a story of its own. No bear is the same and they have become a quiet symbol of kindness, peace and community.
Figen began knitting bears whilst she worked as a psychotherapist, bringing their stories to life in Bears Have Issues Too, a book that helps people to explore and talk about their emotions. Figen found that bears could say things that people sometimes find hard to put into words.
Following the death of Martyn in the Manchester Arena terror attack, Figen picked up her knitting needles again and left a special bear on a train with a note, asking whoever found him to take him on an adventure and to pass him on.
Jordan Bear has been travelling ever since. He has been passed from hand to hand, and has joined well known faces and politicians along the way. Each new person who has travelled with Jordan has become part of his story, and part of something bigger!
Figen has since knitted hundreds of Peace Bears and gifted them to those who have been part of the campaign to introduce Martyn’s Law. Each bear is unique and carries something personal to the person who receives it.
Peace Bears are a reminder that something good can still be made after the worst has happened.
They stand for:
Kindness - small acts that reach further than we might expect
Peace - a gentle answer to hatred and violence
Community - a reminder of the connection, linking everyone to each other.
