Motivational Speaker | Public Safety Campaigner | Counter Terrorism Expert
About Figen
Figen Murray OBE is a motivational speaker and change maker whose work and drive come from lived experience, resilience and long-term perseverance under pressure.
After losing her son Martyn in the Manchester Arena terror attack on 22 May 2017, Figen transformed tragedy into a force for good by navigating a world she had never expected to be part of. With no background in politics, lobbying or national security, she began a campaign as a mother who discovered there was no law requiring basic security in public venues.
What she believed would take six months took more than seven years and a 200 mile walk from the spot where Martyn died at the Manchester Arena to 10 Downing Street, resulting in urgent hip-replacement surgery.
In that time, Figen has navigated political change and repeated delays by working with five Prime Ministers, six Home Secretaries and seven Security Ministers, as well as cross-government departments, including the Home Office and counter-terrorism agencies. Figen’s approach and determination has helped to build a support network across political, media, business and academic stakeholders.
Figen’s efforts were rewarded when securing Royal Assent for the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, informally known as Martyn’s Law, on 3rd April 2025.
Alongside campaigning, Figen has become an experienced national and international speaker, delivering thousands of presentations to audiences including government bodies, policing, counter-terrorism professionals, educators, businesses and community groups.
As a former psychotherapist, Figen brings emotional intelligence, honesty and humour into her talks. She speaks openly about grief and determination, and how to keep going.
